One thing I've learned in my years of collecting is that people collect just about anything that you can possibly think of. If you doubt that, take a gander at the collectibles that get bought and sold on eBay on any given day. I mean, people collect old advertising, gum wrappers, Pez dispensers, and the list goes on and on. For each of them, there is something that makes that item special in some way.

Some people collect as a method of investing. They make each purchase with an eye to that item's future value or how it will add to the value of a collection they already have. Some people just "like" the stuff they collect. There really is no right or wrong reason to start a collection. I have bought many items over the years that have appreciated in value, but I have also made many purchases knowing that there would probably be no financial gain from it in the end. I just thought that particular item was interesting and wanted to have it, so it ended up in my varied collection of "stuff". I'm sure I could probably open up a small collectibles store with the many things I've acquired over the years, but I personally wouldn't put my green depression glass up for sale. Is that strange? I don't know. It is just how I am. Some day maybe it will get passed on or maybe my family will just put it up for sale in an estate sale. I suppose it won't matter much to me at that point, but for now I enjoy having it around. I think that is why people start collecting. They just like having that stuff around.

By far, the easiest way to build a collection of almost anything today is to visit eBay, but I would never want to discourage anyone from striking out on their own to hunt for hidden treasures. If you are the adventurous sort and you are not in any particular hurry to find what you are actually looking for, a Saturday morning spent driving around with a friend or loved one with a similar interest can be quite entertaining and even relaxing.
Where to look for Depression Glass
Be sure to check out garage sales. Most communities have small papers that will specifically list garage sales and yard sales in the area. If you don't happen to have a paper like this in circulation, check online for sites that list such events. You will probably have to visit several sales on some days before you find anything that interests you. That is just the nature of this hobby. The best plan I found was mapping out all of the sales in my area beforehand. Having a GPS makes the job of getting from one place to another much easier, but a good map book can help a lot too if you don't have that convenience available to you.

When you get to the garage sale, ask if they have any old glasses for sale. Asking specifically for depression glass may throw some people off. They are probably just thinking about the boxes of old stuff they found in their attic that they want to get rid of and avoid storing any longer. If they have anything, they will show you. Don't be surprised if it isn't even out on display. Many people think that no one would really be interested in the glasses that Grandma had in her cupboards. If you find a seller like this, you could walk away with a major bargain.

Flea Markets and Rummage Sales
These sales are often held by churches and other charitable organizations. People usually donate their old unwanted items to help with some worthy cause. You can sometimes find great deals at these events, but you better get there early. Seriously, people start lining up to enter these sales half an hour to an hour ahead of time looking for things that they can sell on eBay. If you find something you like, grab it. Don't walk around looking for someone who can answer questions about it. If you do, it will probably be gone when you return a minute later. The items at these sales are often dirt cheap, but you have to act quickly. Pick up what looks even remotely interesting and then examine it. If you don't like it, THEN put it back. Seriously, I've seen people push people out of the way at these sales. Also, make sure that you check the boxes that are underneath tables. Sometimes they have some great stuff hidden inside of them.
Estate Sales
You can often find some very nice glassware being sold at estate sales. If the event is being put on by a company that specializes in clearing estates though, you won't find the deals that you will at the previous venues I've mentioned. These people know exactly what they are selling. You can still find some decent deals, but you won't be grabbing up hundreds of dollars worth of glass for a five spot like you might at the other sales.

If you are willing to put in the time, you can build an entire collection just searching on weekends. It will probably take a lot longer than checking eBay though. You also must go in with a fair bit of patience as you will be dealing with many different people. If you do decide to start hunting on your own, go in with a good attitude. Be polite and enjoy yourself. Who knows, you might just stumble across some hidden treasure.

When dealing with any seller, be sure to check out there feedback. This is an excellent way to determine a couple of very important pieces of information. First off, pay attention to their overall satisfaction scores. If a seller is legitimate and provides quality merchandise, it might not really matter if they have much experience dealing with vintage or antique glass. A seller with outstanding feedback scores can usually be counted on to provide quality service and products that are worth their price. You must remember that some people sell on eBay as a way to supplement their incomes. Many folks go out every weekend looking for treasures to list for sale. The best of these sellers take a lot of pride in bringing top notch products to their buyers.

You should also look to see if the person has experience selling the item you are looking for if you are considering purchasing an item that is on the expensive side. It is simply a matter of the seller knowing the true value of what they have listed. Some types of glassware may have subtle differences that only an expert would recognize. A person who does not specialize in the area might also not think much of scratches or chips that would definitely sway a collector's decision about whether or not to place the next bid on the item. If the seller does not have much information listed, always feel free to ask questions. Many times sellers are happy to have some guidance as to what questions buyers may have. It doesn't matter if you are looking for green depression glass or any other collectible. Get a feel for the seller by asking questions. Often the responses you get (or don't) can be a huge help when you are deciding on whether or not to go through with a purchase.

Green Depression Glass

The particular types of glass items in the depression style make great gifts for people that enjoy collecting unusual and interesting types of plates. They also make good gifts for people that enjoy collecting antique items. You will want to make sure an antique item is authentic before purchasing it. This can usually be verified by an appropriate antique dealer who is knowledgeable on the subject. If purchasing from a second hand place or auction site the person selling the item can provide written verification from a certified dealer in antiques.

Whether you are an avid collector or just want one piece, the color and design of the blue depression glass is sure to enhance any area it is displayed in. Even a single item displayed on a well lit shelf will bring many positive comments from onlookers.

Certain glass patterns were more popular in specific colors of glass. The "Cameo" pattern, for example, was common for green glass, though it could sometimes show up in yellow or pink glass on rare occasions. Also known as the "Ballerina" or "Dancing Girl" pattern, the etching for this flowery design depicted a dancing girl in a window-like casing surrounded by garland and flowers.

The Georgian pattern takes a few leads from Georgian architecture with its focus on symmetry and classical rules. Many green Depression glass patterns created in the Georgian tradition were also called "Lovebirds" patterns. Two facing birds at equal height were typically worked into the design.

Spiral or "Swirl" designs gave texture to ordinary glass. Its twists could be either pressed into the glass or included as part of the blown glass design of plates, drinking glasses and other glassware. Some modern throwbacks on this theme have been able to keep the Spiral pattern for clear glass, making the visual effects for contemporary dishes with this design spectacular. You are almost always drawn to touch it.

Royal lace was also extremely popular for green Depression glass patterns. Its elegant curves and crests evoke the delicacy of lace handkerchiefs or lace tablecloths. It is a fitting pattern for glassware intended to elevate the spirits of Depression-era workers, whose toughest daily hurdles were finding enough money to eat and keeping a steady job. The glass was an affordable way to still have luxury.
